Tokyo Craigslist Jobs and Scams

Last updated : June 20, 2016

Total ads /companies listed : 62

Disclaimers : I don’t guarantee the accuracy of the information posted on this article. What I did was simply gather and save the data (which Craigslist automatically deletes after a certain period of time) and post them here for all to see indefinitely. Please use your own  judgement and proceed accordingly.

Again, before proceeding, please be reminded that for the first two categories, what I posted  are mere ALLEGATIONS, not (yet) proven in court.

Allegation

Allegations have not been proven in court. If allegations are later proven or accepted during a guilty plea, they are then called facts.

LawFacts. Glossary. < http://lawfacts.ca/glossary >

Once you have that in mind, please continue.

News for you: Dismissed sarcastically by most as the site that “inspires great confidence”, I think Tokyo Craigslist deserves more credit than it’s getting. I actually got 4 jobs through that site. Unfortunately, many people are not so lucky. I decided to monitor Craigslist from time to time and screen cap warning posts.

NOTE : After receiving threatening mails, I decided to consult with my lawyer, who advised me to state the source of each ad/ review for copyright reasons.

Tokyo Craigslist Jobs and Scams : Threatening mails

Tokyo Craigslist Jobs and Scams : Threatening mails

A. Scam Companies and Undesirable Employers

The first category lists establishments (companies, schools, f&b establishments) have with direct complaints posted on Craigslist (or any other job sites) . The complainants accuse the establishment of being a scam by doing any of the following:

I.  Scam Companies

  1. the entity itself as (allegedly) being dubious/suspicious (may even be flagged at eBay Hijacker Fraudulent/Fake Domains & Log On Pages or such pages)
  2. (allegedly)  doing fraudulent activities
  3. (allegedly)  soliciting money for training, job-hiring, investing etc.
  4. or no real work at all (allegedly)  (posted to fish for information or to benefit off someone’s work by doing trials).

10) Scam : Professional Male Narrators for Studio Recordings (Tokyo)(Tokyo-Japan)
11) Bilingual Coordinator (Minami Aoyama)
12) Tired of died end jobs… Then how about a pyramid scheme! (Egypt)
13) Scam : Japanese company hiring*Online job

I also included companies to stay away from or be careful of.

II. Undesirable employers

  1. They are companies with direct complaints on forums, Craigslist, Reddit, Glassdoor and elsewhere
  2. The people flagging these companies are not necessarily  employees or ex-employees. They may have limited, but nevertheless undesirable experience with the potential employers during the interview or application process
  3. The conditions posted are exploitative if not downright illegal

1)Looking for people with image editing experience (Photoshop)
2)Head ALT needed right away! (Kiryu, Gunma)
3) Get paid for tutoring a CEO (Nishi-Shinjuku)
4)Looking for a native Japanese speaker – to read Japanese URGENT (Japan)

13)English Teacher wanted for Perky CC!! (Kamata)
14)Native English Teacher – Preschool (Tokyo, Fuchu-shi) (hell)

B. Companies with Terrible Work Conditions

The second category is a list of establishments (companies, schools, f&b establishments) that are legit and not scam companies per se. They  may even be duly registered in Japan or abroad.

There are two qualifications for a company to be listed here :
1) They must have direct complaints, posted on forums, Craigslist, Reddit, Glassdoor, the Japan Times or elsewhere.
2) Their allegations must be any of the following :

  • Economic exploitation : (a) non-payment of salary (b)unjustly withholding of a portion of salary (c) unjustly withholding the entire salary
  • Discrimination and Harassment : (a) Gender discrimination (b) Ageism (c) Racism  (d) workplace bullying and harassment (e) sexual harassment
  • Bad management : (a) Non-support of staff (b) Unreasonable scheduling (c) Abuse of power
  • Misrepresentation : (a) Using different names (b) False claims about work conditions (c) and salary

Again these are mere allegations! Use your own best judgement and decide for yourself.

3) Heart Corporation / Heart English School
4) Coco Juku School
5) Part Time Cleaning Job (Tokyo)

15) Magical Pop Kids in Chiba

C. Establishments  that are perpetually looking for new employees

The third is a list of companies with no direct complaints but are perpetually looking for new employees, for whatever reasons. Posting ALL THE TIME raises a red flag for some job-seekers, although there is no complaint yet from previous employees. In this case, there are no allegations.

1) Tokyo American Club
2) Okinawa Restaurant / Bars
3) May Flower Guest House
4) Bar Asappara in Ginza

I got a job offer by simply submitting an incomplete CV without even talking to anyone. Try to find the address through Google map and you wouldn’t be able to find anything but residential homes. I tried calling them but the  number they gave me is almost always an answering machine, with someone obviously faking a British accent. The people “working” for them have sketchy backgrounds, you’d see them working in companies such as Baltic Bakery Limited, that shares the same address. Lastly, the if you check on some free information online, their capital is said to be £100.00

(NOTE: The douche bags who put this lame-ass ad up have been sending me harassing emails because I’m scaring away the fish. Ladies, I’d watch out for these guys.)I can assure you that A/V companies and agents in Japan do NOT pay for doctor visits, salon care, dinners, and transportation. They also don’t have one of their “models” soliciting for them on a website like Craiglist. These agents get hundreds of headshots and CVs a day–they don’t need to look for women on Craigslist.I know this because I REALLY work in the A/V business in Japan. If you want a legitimate AV career, hire a manager. It’s as simple as that.Nice try, “Jen.”

Economic exploitation : Looking for people with image editing experience (Photoshop)

Undesirable employers : Looking for people with image editing experience (Photoshop). Screen cap from http://japanchecker.com/

This exploitative company keeps coming back to the well at Craigslist to grab a new round ****** every few weeks. That says it all.

This is essentially a typesetting job. It’s also more than that because of their broken workflow — when they actually incorporate you into it — because they prey on suckers on Craigslist and offer unsustainably low pay. Meanwhile they are happy to have you translate “trial pages” for free, which for all you know are being used officially. If you do the trials, be sure to watermark the **** out of them.

But don’t do the trials. Don’t apply for the job.

You need your own LICENSED software, your own LICENSED fonts, and forget that, let’s say you pirate everything, there is still the value of your KNOWLEDGE of the software and applied fonts, the practical availability (just because you freelance and do quick work quickly doesn’t mean your Tuesday morning and Sunday midnight are interchangeable), Japanese comprehension (hell, ENGLISH comprehension), contextual editing and rewriting, and more. All of these things demand MORE pay. Not less.

Pay is offered “per page” instead of “per word”, which is only in your favor if pages contain one or two words and require no contextualizing. Fat chance.

They are offering a “big project” which tells me their business model is to trump up their claimed resources and offer impossibly low rates to contract with distributors, making their profit by f****** the resources (you) right up the ass with terrible pay.

I work in this business. We compete directly with one of Japan’s biggest producers and sellers of manga, DMM.com, who is aggressively expanding in the general English market. It’s easy to imagine how someone like DMM might contract out to smaller publishers and agencies like this bullshit one for translated content at bulk rates. It’s easy to imagine how the bullshit agency might fish for suckers on such as Craigslist, and of course pay fractional bulk rates such as 100 yen “per page”. You’re freelancing because the middleman pie eaters keep multiplying like this at regular jobs and cut into livable wages. Absolutely do not apply for this job. Avoid. Avoid. The only interaction you should have with them is to find out who their clients are, and then market yourself directly to those clients. If not, if you’re kidding yourself that this is a fair wage for a possibly fledgling freelancer, get ye to a convenience store. More about that below.

STAY AWAY from this awful bullshit offer. 100 yen per page, h*** ****.

IF you are able to fully typeset a page every 11 minutes, IF your workflow is geared for optimal assembly line production, congratulations, your considerable resourcefulness and expertise are worth, to the people offering this gig, the national hourly minimum (700 yen). You have to typeset an entire 7-page manga IN ONE HOUR to earn the same wage as that retarded high school dropout at the convenience store who puts the soup in a plastic bag sideways. In three hours of standing around, the retard will have earned 2100 yen. In order for YOU to “earn” the equivalent, you had better be god damned tap-dancing and singing and producing the hell out of those manga at a miraculous speed. By the end of his shift, the retard will take home between 5000 and 8000 yen. For you to get that, you have to typeset 80 pages of manga. Think you can do that within the span of a regular work shift?

This wage is directly insulting to your intelligence and your talents. The person who posted the job offer thinks so little of you, the only way they could express it “better” is by making you lick your own fecal smegma off the finger they shoved up your bottom and are now pointing in your face. “YOU SHOULD CONSIDER YOUSELF LUCKY TO GET EVEN THIS,” says the pointy finger.

Try taking the above paragraph and formatting it into a multi-panel comic in less than 11 minutes. Go on, treat yourself. Stretch it into into three pages. Let’s assume you already did this for free once, for the “trial”.

Congratulations, you just earned 300 yen.

I’ll send it to you at the end of next month. There is a bank transfer fee of 470 yen.

DO NOT APPLY. STAY AWAY from this low pay b*******.

Review(s):

This ad is real. I did it for a minute but the CEO was always late, never apologized, was a bit arrogant and generally unfriendly unfortunately. Perhaps he was a better person than the one he presented himself as. I asked him to pay for transportation and his secretary apologetically responded that he would only pay for half! A stingy CEO that can’t pay 200yen despite purporting to want to improve the world? He couldn’t name any issues that he cared about or would change if he could despite the whole company being built around building capital to affect change. If I thought he had genuine interest in and ability to improve the world I may have accepted the lowball but I quit immediately. Those things and the low salary, 2500yen showed how much he valued my and your time. I’m sure there’s a teacher out there for him though. One who already has lots of time and money and just enjoys being in the orbit of kings and their little kingdoms.

If the so-called CEO went to a language school he would be paying about 7,000 yen for his lesson. Yet he can’t even pay 200 yen for a train ticket when the teacher comes to his office.

This kind of behavior reflects badly on the company.

Review(s):

It’s ridiculous.

I actually DID apply out of curiosity since I live in Akihabara. It gets much worse!

They have a silly, badly worded contract. They offer 500 yen maximum compensation for travel, but IN THE SAME LINE of the contract they specify a minimum of 5 photographs must be provided for each article. I asked if this meant that they withhold travel compensation if photos aren’t provided, and they didn’t answer that. Instead, they stated the actual requirement is 10 photographs. Okay…

The contract fails to specify payment method, though the Craigslist listing says Paypal or Japanese bank. In the case of the latter, do they do a bank transfer for EVERY article? Or hold your pay ransom until you do all 10 articles and provide 100 photos? Because domestic transfer fees between competing banks can be as high as 500 yen. Who bears that cost? It’s practically the cost of an article in itself!

The contract also doesn’t cover rewrites or what happens when an articles or photos don’t satisfy the employer.

It’s a foreign business appealing to foreign laborers in a country that’s nobody’s home, and Japan’s not litigious. The contract’s not specific, nor binding, nor enforceable. They shouldn’t be sending it out at all. It’s sure to scare off anyone who wasn’t already completely disgusted by the ridiculous job listing in the first place.

But let’s say I’m desperate and an idiot (reality: I am) and proceed anyway (reality: I didn’t).

Crunching the numbers for best-case payout:

A person living in Akihabara owns all the necessary equipment and has extensive knowledge of every shop so that s/he can write the articles back to back. That’s almost attractive… a little fibbing and you can theoretically pull down 1200 yen per article (700 yen + 500 yen for “travel fees” each), and be done in 5-10 hours. Then just trickle the articles to the employer over a few days or weeks.

But then!

There’s the pesky 10 photograph requirement.

Now you’re doing two jobs: photojournalism and article writing. That doubles your time investment, or halves your average hourly wage.

The resulting timestamps of the photos eliminate the ability to claim 500 yen in travel fees per article — if the photos are taken all in the same day, it’s clear you only took one trip. That’s another 40% of your income gone… now we’re at a quarter of your average hourly wage.

You of course know this. 1200/4 = 300 yen per hour’s work, for what may be 10-20 hours of specialized labor in TWO professions. You pegged it at 233 yen per hour.

Then there’s the fact that most Akihabara tourist traps don’t allow indoor photography, and have entry fees. Since you MUST require photos, you’re going into collectively thousands of yen of debt.

The real killer here is the photo requirement.

Fuck these opportunistic, exploiting shitbags.

Double fuck them for their even more appalling offer for photos on social media!

Wow, 2100 yen PER MONTH for dozens of hours of photography work!

Ugh.

Review(s):

Here’s my account of what happened.

It concerns IHCWay – They are effectively an agency matching students to teachers rather than an English School as such. Their website info looked OK but my small experience with them suggests they operate in a highly arbitrary and inefficient way.

I filled in their online application form on Friday, 24 July 2015. Straight away I got an email titled ‘Returned mail: see transcript for details’ which read ’The following addresses had permanent fatal errors….reason: 550 5.7.0 (BAY004-MC5F6) Unfortunately, messages from (219.94.162.66) on behalf of (yahoo.com) could not be delivered due to domain owner policy restrictions.’ This email also included all the content I had submitted in their online form. The message appeared to be rejecting an email I had sent them, but I hadn’t sent any email. It left me unclear as to whether they had received my online application submission or not, so I forwarded them an email with a message saying I had received the ‘bounce’ email and it appeared there was a fault with their system.
They didn’t answer my email directly (so no explanation of the bounce email was given) but on the following Monday I received this email:

Subject: RE: IHCWAY.NET teaching position

Thank you for the application.
Please read our website ihcway.net thoroughly,
especially the system and FAQ,and if you are interested in coming to have a job interview, call 09063021988 during 1 pm- 8 pm on Tuesday,July 28/ 1 pm- 8 pm on Wednesday,July 29 for set up the time for an interview.
Best regards,
IHCWAY
Sanbancho,Chiyoda-ku Tokyo

As requested by the email I rang them several times the following day. There was no answer. After several attempts to call them I figured that perhaps there was a fault with the phone number they had given me, so I Googled to find another number, and found an 03 local number on their website. I tired to call this number several times too, but also no answer. I tried again the next day, several times; always no answer. I was calling using FooCall, an app on my phone which allows calling nationally and internationally through the internet at low rates. I rang a friend to check this was working OK; they answered so I knew it was. I have a prepaid Japanese mobile but the rates mean I only use it when there is no alternative.
Presuming there was some problem at IHCWay’s end I sent the following email:

Date: Wed, 29 Jul 2015
Subject: RE: IHCWAY.NET teaching position
Hi IHCWay,
I have tried to call you yesterday several times and today, but nobody is answering.
I have also just tried to call your office number – 03 3511 3121 – but also no answer. Please can you advise me how I can make contact?
Or please can you ring me on 080xxxxxxxx?
Regards,

Shortly afterwards I got the following reply.

Subject: RE: IHCWAY.NET teaching position
Hello,
We haven’t received any call from your number.
But we have received so many calls from the number we don’t expect at all since yesterday and even to the number for the students only.
If the person who are calling from the unidentified number is you , we are sorry but could you please stop?
Best regards,
IHCWAY
Sanbancho,Chiyoda-ku Tokyo

So far, polite enough, though rather bizarre. It appears they have caller display and are only answering their phones to known numbers, which for a business seems a very peculiar and restrictive practice. Calling using FooCall means my phone’s UK number probably appears as the caller ID. So I thought perhaps they are concerned they will have to pay some fee to answer an international call (though as they hadn’t explained why they weren’t answering I could only make guesses). I have used FooCall widely and there is no fee to receive calls routed through them. Furthermore, IHCWay’s website says that they will employ teachers based overseas to conduct internet based language teaching, so they must be open to receive international calls in some circumstances, surely? (Or pity the poor teachers overseas who can’t get an answer from IHCWay to their problem!).
I sent IHCWAy the following email.

Date: Wed, 29 Jul 2015
Hello,
I have an 080 Softbank number but to use that phone is very expensive (90yen/minute). For that reason I usually use an app on my UK phone which allows me to make calls over the internet at a reasonable cost. It should not cost you anything to receive those calls. The number will probably appear to you as 44791xxxxxxx, but it is actually an app calling through the internet. Is that a problem for you?
If so please let me know why. I have been using this app very regularly in Japan without any problems so far.
Regards,

I got no response. The next day I tried to call them using my Japanese 080 number, hoping in this way to get past the restrictive call vetting they are operating. Again, no answer. Shortly afterwards I received the following email.

Sent: Thursday, 30 July 2015
Hello,
We have already read your message yesterday, and would like to cancel the offer for the job interview.
It seems we are not the right place for you.
Best regards,
IHCWAY
Sanbancho,Chiyoda-ku Tokyo

I was affronted by their attitude but wanting to remain reasonable, and to get to the bottom of what the problem is that they are perceiving, I sent them the following email, later the same day.

I am very sorry you have made this decision, as I feel I could offer a lot to your company and your students.
If your original email asking me to call you had stated I need to use my 080 phone I would have done so, but the message did not say so. All I have done is follow the instructions you gave me – to call you at the stated times. When I got no answer on the number you gave me I thought it might be faulty so I searched the internet for an alternative. Your 03-3511-3121 number is readily available on Google, and I did not see anything saying this number was for students only. I apologise if you don’t want teachers/applicants ringing this number, but how was I to know?
Regarding using my smartphone app to call you, do you think it unreasonable of me to call you using a method which is most cost-effective for me?
When I got no answer I emailed you to try to find out why not. That seems to me a reasonable thing to do. In my email I asked you to explain what the problem was, but you didn’t respond. I have today tried to call you using the 080 number, again you didn’t answer.
I am left wondering what you really want, and why you have not been able to explain it to me. I think that is not unreasonable, is it?
I have spent some time reading your company information and preparing for an interview and I feel very let down.
Regards,

I got no reply. Considering IHCWay’s unprofessional and arbitrary behaviour that is probably not surprising. I will stick to the facts as they happened and won’t go in to my personal feelings from this experience, but you can imagine the irritation and frustration IHCWay’s behaviour has caused me (and to express personal opinions may incur further hostility from IHCWay – see the note on eikaiwaschool.net below).
I have reproduced the email exchange I had in full, with only names and my phone number removed for privacy purposes, so they cannot deny the truth of what happened.
I am posting this information to save others also wasting time with this company. IHCWay have given the impression that if there is anything which deviates from their very narrowly defined required behaviour they will shut done and offer no explanation or resolution. I want to warn people (both potential teachers and students) of my experience so they can draw their own experiences.

Whilst I did not see other negative reporting on the internet of IHCWays’s company practices (in the limited research I did) I did find that they demanded eikaiwaschool.net withdraw comments on them with threats of legal action. I can only wonder what they have to hide?
Comment on this blog

Dear Eikaiwaschool.net users:

Our site tries to evaluate schools and put only adequate information about the price of companies, reputation of schools, and service offerings on our site. This school (ihcway) has contacted us for some reason expressing their desire to remove any/all information about them on our site which makes us feel that they either do not want to make available 100% percent information available for students OR they rather nobody post any information about them on any site other than their own. Though we firmly believe the information was of an opinion and express only facts based on both teachers and student interviews/reviews, the school requested for it to be removed. For that reason and to adhere to their demands, we are sorry that we will not post their company information here.

We regret that the only information we can provide about this school will be from the commment section below. We welcome any comments and will share your opinions. This school can choose to demand us to remove their company information BUT they can not demand us to edit/censor user comments. We will contintue to respect open expression of opinions and freedom of users to open express their reviews. We will not edit/remove any student commments so long as we identify the comments are from valid IP addresses and real users.

Furthermore, we strive to always provide only factual information and allow schools to edit or revise their company information. We offered for this school to do so but they would rather delete everything rather than post anything. For that, we can only rely on your help to gather more information about this organization.

Just do a search here for “business English” and you will see that everyone’s offer is better than yours Are you that out of tune with the market, or are you just a cheap penny pinching fucktard?

Teachers, let’s not respond to these unreasonable offers like this where they are trying to squeeze every yen out of you like a fucking eikaiwa. It just encourages the man to stick it to us more. You can work for a company with a good reputation for 3500, 4000, and even 5000 yen per hour. Those jobs are out there. Just do a thorough search.

Don't expect your payment to increase, but to decrease. This will probably happen if they move you to another city, with that old excuse " that city pays less..."
If you get sick, they will call you EVERYDAY, even if you have a doctor's note, even if you are in a very bad health condition. Expect them to make pressure to go back to work ASAP, threatening to get you fired.
Staff don't really know what is going on. You you receive hundreds of emails during each month asking repeatedly to sign things, to send documents. They seem to not keep track of things, random people will email you asking for things.
As they fear you to do what I'm doing: "Telling other people how bad they are"
Fart corp will send you many pledges asking you to NEVER tell anyone about this company "or else...".
I never signed them, simply replied saying; I have contract signed already, I see no need of giving other signs...
Dude, I can't barely write, so nervous I feel.

And payment, from next year (2014) you will be paid per day, certainly it won’t be more than 1050 p/day. BOE’s will continue paying them same amount. BUT YOU, will work to Fart corp for LESS money. They will make money from your hard work.

There are so many things I could write here.
My advice is: Try hard finding a DIRECT CONTRACT with your local BOE.
Avoid companies that offer you a payment bellow 230000 JPY, because bellow that means these DCs are ripping out your pocket.
Get a factory job: Pay more, can work paid extra hours and you will probably learn Japanese.
I make 380000JPY working 10h/day, 5 days/week.

If you have no option, leave Japan. It doesn’t worth build your life depending of ALT money.
It’s a dead career.

Foreign staff expect to be non-renewed or terminated before reaching five years of employment so they don’t become members of the parent company. Company wide issues: constant change in their business plan. New plans are implemented without being thought out or materials supplied to teach the new classes. Dress code is equivalent to funeral wear and wearing a suit jacket when teaching children is poor pedagogy.

In all honesty, this has to be one of the worst working experiences in my time in Japan. The initial interview was very promising, new company; prospects of promotion, salary increases, payment of bonuses. In all actuality, there are no opportunities for promotion, salary increases have been put on the backburner, bonuses are a measley sum in comparison with the amount that the customer has to fork over and for renewal bonuses, while they eventually paid, they were 3 months late and minus a fee for re-newal counselling that had previously been promised and indeed included in the Working Rules and Regulations.
Any issues that arose which required talking to someone in head office were an non-starter. Phone calls, emails, faxes from the instructors to head office were all ignored. Now they have a foreigner who attempts to deal with any issues that still arise, but again these can take up to a month to resolve.

(2)*Attention* fellow teachers interested in working for Nichii Gakkan? Are you? Think again.

I am currently working for them, and not for much longer. I assumed this would be a better company to work for, because it is an establish medical company providing services since 1960′s; and they were the ones to buy Gaba. Well they started their own chain of schools called CoCo Juku. They plan to open 100 schools within this year, and try to be the new Nova in Japan. Sounds good, able to work for a Japanese company some stability, with benifits sounded very attractive. So I applied for the job a couple of months back, and started working in March. To find out they are no different, if anything worse than other Eikawa’s. They say your salary will be in the range of 265,000-295,000 with benefits. What they don’t tell you is; that you have to pay into the pension system*No exceptions.*You have to pay into the labor union, in which you can not depend on until three months, but they will deduct the union fee starting from your first week.*You have to pay into the company’s fund- Note which is for Full time company employees only, teachers are not full time employees, but contract workers.*You must pay into the nursing care system, funds for special holding companies, employment insurance premium, and of course the federal tax. This all comes to 23% total deduction from your base salary. 265,000 sounds reasonable until you receive your first paycheck, and you bring home 195,000. Have a family, or looking to save some money very hard to do with this kind of pay. The company is deducting all these fees from a contract worker in which they can not receive the full benefits, because only full time company employees can. Not to mention the characters they have hired so far. The staff are unorganized at the main office. The schools/branch staff are not even qualified to handle customers/students, and work with foreigners.

The teachers that are working there are 70% idiots, and have the slightest clue on how to teach English, and the 30% that are capable to teach are leaving already including myself. Do not expect the weekends off, do not expect to have national holidays off in which the Japanese staff have, not the teachers. It is clearly an old typical Japanese company atmosphere in where the Japanese are superior, and their word is law. Foreigners are regarded as a product they sell nothing more, nothing less. So if you are interested in working with this company, I hope this gives you some insight, and shed some light on things that are not known about this company. One last thing the thing that pushed me over the ledge was we were forced to sign our contracts to just have some the agreements previously agreed to change at the last minute. They will not pay your transportation fee until the 2nd pay period. They will not let you have a copy of the rules, and regulation book, because they will be revising it, and believe me they have changed over 30 times in a month. Well take it from me if you are a professional teacher looking to work for a decent company with the right pay, then look else where. Do not waste your time because believe me the paper work process all the forms that you have to fill out, is very time consuming, and frustrating just to find out most of the forms you fill out is you agreeing to have the company deduct money that is not benefiting you at all. You have been warned. Any other questions feel free to ask. I may have been ranting on, but I’m just so pissed off. I had my hopes up high, and was proud to work for a Japanese company, just to have my hopes shot down, by the company’s choice to deal with foreigners.

Be careful, that guy doesn’t pay you and keep pretending that you are on training and doesn’t pay you…He comes to his store always drunk, how could he be serious?!? He is not professional at all…The all thing is such a masquerade…
He his a perv and keeps saying crap…No joke…He accused some dude of pedophilia, and one another to be a terrorist!!! Sincerely this is very offensive…
Don’t trust him…He is a manipulator, he is a manipulator…
Once he clearly told me that he wasn’t gonna pay some teacher while he was drunk…He even asked me once to beat some other teacher for no reason…This guy is a dangerous…
So far some German and some dudes from Europe has been complaining about him…
The best thing to do is to call to contact the police, and go to HelloWork to denounce him…

The school name is MOSHIER TLC…www.mtlc.biz

!!! WARNING !!!
Be careful that
Michael [last name withheld] guy is a manipulator.
He will pretend that you need a period of trial (undefined), then he is gonna pretend that you don’t fit the job so he won’t pay you…
He even tells sometimes that the parent are complaining about you while you never met them or seen them assisting a lesson.
Thus, that Michael Moshier guy won’t give you a chance to meet them…Of course not cause everything he tells is just lies and discouragement…
He even uses some nasty racist excuse such as “the parent don’t like you cause you’re not blonde” or you are too black or you look too Asian…
That aside since when a training is not a paid assignment?!?
He is gonna try to intimidate you…Telling you that you’re a volunteer while this isn’t what was discussed, he may also say some other lies to try to discourage you getting your due like “I’m gonna call the Police” (As you don’t have any contract)… Time is money…Nobody works for free…He is just gonna use you…
The sequence is he following: He uses one then “fake fire him/her” for nonsense and then hires a new one then fires him/her on and on and on…That’s how he makes his money…Think about it why does he keep posting over and over, why does he need new teachers each week? his shop is so small, so why does he need so many teachers so many times?
I know many guys that has been through that injustice with him…He is gonna make you wast your time, money and energy…
That aside he is a pervert and says nasty things about women on duty… Really???…
He is always drunk even when he gives a lesson and when I say drunk I mean drunk as hell…
He will tell you that he gets drunk before work on purpose cause he hates his live…
That aside, if the parent don’t like you then get you’re money and try to talk to the parents and ask them what they don’t like about you cause as a teacher you have to talk to them to solve the problem right, he will never let you talk to them…
Unless he makes you sign a CONTRACT with SIGNATURE, a STAMP and a DATE.
Mentioned that you do not work for FREE right away, and discuss you wage like a professional is supposed to.
If this guy asks you whether you’ re “OK” being paid CASH…Don’t say yes…
He is gonna tell you that he will pay you each 27th of the month…Think about it…What is the point of being payed cash monthly???
At least if you are getting payed daily so you get your due every single day you work…

Ask a contract… Ask how much he is gonna pay you per hour, how long and how much for the trial which as to be a defined period???
All professional goes through that process…
He is gonna try to avoid those questions and he will tell you that his wife will tell you LATER… A professional institution should be able to provide you a contract the day of the interview…

What kind of school, and I’d like to precise that this is supposed to be a school for KIDS, so what kind of school would hired some random people without checking their records…
Sincerely, leaving kids with random people on a such a weak basis is just scary no contract nothing…Really…If I would be the parents I would call the police.
And trust me the parents don’t know that fact for sure.

He wrote me a childish email, telling me because I wasn’t officially employed I don’t deserve any money and that he doesn’t ever want to see me again like he’s a 15 year old.

***UPDATE***
Thank you to everyone who emailed me with regards to my first posting. I didn’t expect anyone to actually respond to this, much less receive such positive remarks. I would like to apologize to those of you who sent me an email that I didn’t reply to. My original post was removed and because of that I was not able to send responses to anyone through the craigslist system. As I can’t email anyone back with the old link and certainly don’t expect anyone to resend their emails (unless you want to, of course. I’ll be happy to answer any questions anyone has about this), I’ll just answer the one most common question I got from everyone. Who are these people?

The company goes by the name of Grape Culture Association (sometimes they just call themselves Grape English). Here’s their website (http://www.grape-english.com/). I recommend you stay far away from these guys. They talk a good game, but in the end they have no idea how to run a business and are either ignorant of or are simply ignoring Japanese Labor Laws (be careful if you confront the head guy about this. He throws quite the tantrum). If you do decide to work with them I wish you the best of luck and hope you don’t have to put up with what I did. Just be aware of the kind of people you will be dealing with.

***ORIGINAL***
As a former employer of these people I feel that I should let those who are thinking about this know a bit about what you are getting yourself into. They will say a lot of nice things and seem to have some great ideas, but the truth of the matter is a bit different.

1. They will NOT pay for your transportation (I guess if you live in the area this isn’t a big deal).
2. They will make promises about providing materials and a curriculum which they will not make good on (maybe this has changed, but I doubt it).
3. Their contract contains a clause about being penalized 50,000 yen for early termination of contract (which is a violation of the Japanese Labor Standards Act).
4. If you terminate early they will withhold all of your outstanding wages (also a violation).
5. With regards to the contract, IF they do get around to sending you one, there is not even a place for a company representative’s signature, nor is there an official company hanko or seal (in every other position I have taken, having both of these from the employer has been standard practice. Once again may not be an issue to you).
6. They do not take taxes out of your wages, nor do they supply you with any pay slips so that you can properly claim your wages for tax purposes (could cause issues down the line in dealing with your ward office or immigration).

Now perhaps they will respond to this trying to discredit me because I terminated my contract early. Indeed I did for the above reasons as well as a few others. These are quite shady practices and I wanted no part in it. Now this is just my opinion based on my experiences with them and anyone else is free to work with them if they so please. I just wanted to shed some light on this for anyone thinking about this position so they can make an informed decision.

I’d like to mention that out of that the rent for the apartment was 45,000 PLUS the hidden fee of 3,000 per month just for them to keep in case I finished my contract and left without paying some bills. This was never explained to me, I had to ask them about it. The salary in the ad mentions 230,000-250,000 and no, the monthly salary is actually 220,000 for the first 3 months (“training period”-although there is no actual training given) and then goes up to 240,000.

They told me foreigners don’t need to sign up for pension and health care, (thank God I didn’t listen to them on this one), they deducted 20,000 yen a month from my 220,000 salary and told me it was for “taxes”, they told me I could not move out of the bedbug infested apartment that they owned, they told me to have all my personal mail sent to the school for convenience (nope, they wanted to go through it first, and throw away all the bills for health insurance for some crazy reason!), and finally, when I quit, they told me I could leave in 3 months.

Uhhhh, no? I said, that is not in my contract. I am leaving at the end of next month (giving 1 and a half months of notice).

They said: oh, it is in your contract! It’s just in the part that we never gave you/showed to you, because we thought you were a good person.

Seriously.

Oh, it feels good to get this all out finally! Actually, I don’t mind naming and shaming, because they most certainly deserve it. I’m not even going into all the other psychotic shit they did, or the shitty way they ran the school.

They advertise 2000 yen and 2500 yen for experienced teachers. I went in with 10 years experience and was paid 2000 yen. Headquarters is very tight and difficult to deal with. You are expected to do 2 50min classes, have a break and work 5x50min classes back to back. In between lessons you explain to the parents what you did. You have a translator but if you speak Japanese, they force you to do it yourself. You’ll be pressured to do the weekend work, Sunday’s too. After quitting I wasn’t paid. They said it was damages but the following pay check went unpaid also. The money isn’t taxed so you will earn under 2000 yen per hour, no matter how much experience you have. You don’t recieve pay slips which is shady. When I communicated with head office, I spoke to the same guy every time but he changed his name every time we spoke. Very shady!

Hey buddy,

I just read your shitty post, im laughing and im passing it on to all of my “communication strategy coach” friends aka English instructors. it reads like something written by a highschool kid who hates brown trousers.

“Attorney-like questioning skills” keep watching Murder She Wrote pal.
“Upscale, fashionable business attire and appearance are a must — not exceptions” i cant take this seriously.
“iPad (Plus two apps to be specified prior to acceptance. Consultant borne cost of apps of approx. 1000¥)” what are these magical apps of which you speak? What secrets do they hold?

and finally, you (a stranger) ask for a lot of information for a first date…

Really helpful. I’m actually looking for a job in japan, I am a young filipina. Anyway, it just inspires me that other filipinos managed to live there, because that has been a dream of mine to actually live there and work,I can’t even explain, however it seems so hard for me, and sometimes it even seems totally impossible. So I do love your blog, and was wondering how did you do it? I mean, what opportunities and such, that got you to where you are now?, I really am very curious. thanks 🙂

Hello Emmy, thank you for your comment. To answer your question, my husband is Japanese. But I also have a bit of history with Japan. I did one year exchange program in 2003 when I was in the university, where I met my husband now. But before we got married, I was able to come back thanks to the people I met here as a student.
Life is not easy in Japan, especially if you’re non-white. Most jobs open to Filipinos are blue collar jobs – they are decent jobs, for sure, but it’s not something I went to school for or something I’d like to do forever. Luckily, there are many equal-opportunity employers (usually foreign-based capitals). If you want to teach English, for example, I found that Americans are less critical of you than Japanese. Japanese will forever doubt your English ability, simply because there is no way for them to evaluate it themselves. However, there are some Japanese-owned English conversation schools which accept applications from non-native speakers. Try Gaba, and they might just sponsor your visa. I hope that answered your question? If not, feel free to ask anything. Have a great day.

        Hi,

thank you so much for replying. And i’m so sorry in advance, because I’m gonna ask a lot of questions. 🙂

I get what you say about life being hard there, I’ve heard a lot of filipinos saying so, however, I still wish to go there, because life here in the Philippines has been very hard for me as well, so I think I can somehow survive japan, most especially because I am in love with its culture, and it seems so fascinating. But still, I guess I’m not willing to take a blue collar job, since I’m college graduate. I don’t know if it’s possible to get work in an office or something since I’m not really good at teaching? I’ve heard some filipinos get an office job, do you know any of them by any chance?

PS But how old were you exactly when you studied in japan(and now how old are you)? I’m already about 22-23, and I’m thinking it might be too late for me to study. Anway I don’t even have the money for studying, if I’m going there I truly need some work. But I guess you are just really lucky, did you already have an interest in japan even before? because you had wanted to be exchange student right? – and also do you speak japanese?

Thank you again if you do find time to reply. and finally sorry for so many questions 🙂 – Also please don’t publish this reply on your site, it could be just between us…

  4. ikalwewe
    January 30, 2014

Hi Elle, thank you for reply.

Sure, I don’t mind answering some of your questions. But a word of warning: this post is going to be loooong.

I’d also like to write down some entries I made about working in Japan, because I think they will be very insightful for you.

JOB HUNTING IN JAPAN – THE HORRORS OF HELLO WORK. ALTERNATIVE JOB SITES?
    http://rakenrol.net/japan/?p=1257

SO, YOU WANT TO TEACH ENGLISH IN JAPAN?
    http://rakenrol.net/japan/?p=824

BEING AN ALT (ASSISTANT LANGUAGE TEACHER) IN JAPAN : WHY YOU’D BE BETTER OFF DOING SOMETHING ELSE
    http://rakenrol.net/japan/?p=198

I was 19 when I first came to study in Japan. It was a scholarship courtesy of the Japanese government. So no, I didn’t have to spend a cent. I am now 29. So it’s been ten years…. I was interested in Japan but I didn’t speak Japanese. Now I speak, read, write Japanese (JLPT2 passer, yes!). It has deteriorated over the years, however, but I can still pretty much hold a conversation..

    Anyway to your questions..

Office job – The reality is that the most open industries for foreigners in Japan are the ff:
    1) English teaching, Eikaiwai (English conversation) – Ranging from 1000-2500 Pesos an hour (in Tokyo)
    2) Blue collar jobs ( factory, convenient stores, cleaning jobs) – From 450-600 Pesos an hour(in Tokyo)
    3) F&B – restaurants, bars – From 450-600 Pesos an hour(in Tokyo)

The only way you can get an office job is if you

    1) speak very good Japanese (translation&interpretation. regular office jobs if you are super fluent in Japanese)
    2) are sent by the forces at home (ie: expats sent by the mother company)
    3) have a special skill that is badly needed with a relevant amount of experience (ie. Software engineers, SAP, c++)
–Note : I did an office job for a short time. I didn’t need to speak Japanese though..

Even then, your problem is obtaining a VISA. There are some types of visa that allow you to work in Japan:
    1) Student visa (limited number of hours per week, during my time it was 20 hours)
    2) Spouse of Japanese/child of Japanese visa – if you are married to Japanese or if you are a child of a Japanese citizen
    3) Working Holidays – issued only to select countries. The Philippines is excluded, no surprises there.
    4) Specific work-visa sponsored by the company.
    5) Resident (if you’ve been living here a long time..)

Your best bet is to get #4. But in order to get that, you need to
    3) have a special skill that is badly needed with a relevant amount of experience (ie. Software engineers, SAP, c++ )

Even then, there is a large pool of jobless here to be filled up before they start looking abroad. There’s an obligation for the company to prove to the authorities that they have exhausted the local pool before before they can offer the job to someone abroad. What can you offer that a Japanese cannot? I have had a Norwegian colleague who just couldn’t get a chef visa (or however you call it) though he had listed an experience of ten years and the restaurant was really pushing to sponsor his visa. In the end, they had to let him go…

And even if you get a work visa, your work is limited to a certain field. Engineer visa holders cannot work as English teachers and vice versa.

Sure, there are companies looking for Tagalog speakers, but they are rare and hard to come by. And because there are 300,000+ Filipinos in Japan with valid visas, it is not a good business strategy to sponsor anyone from abroad.

I am not trying to let you down or anything. But this is the reality. There is a hard-working boy in the Philippines asking me for any sort of opportunities, even factory work. Asking around, one of the Filipinas I talked to replied, “If it were that easy, I would’ve my brother working here already!”

If you know any Japanese national, you can ask that person to “guarantee” you. But it is no obligation on their part. And “guaranteeing” is risky. People just wouldn’t do it.

Also, just because you have a college degree at home doesn’t mean you can get an office job. Remember, you are competing against the Tokyo university graduates, the Michigan and Indiana grads, the Sorbonne grads. I went to a prestigious back home as well as in Japan and France, and it was very challenging to get my foot in the door. Sadly , most Pinoys cannot even get an English teaching job because our English skills are in a sad state and many Japanese have learned that Pinoys ,never mind what we claim, have a strong Filipino accent, use weird vocabulary and wrong grammar. (Sorry— this is the truth. I am not saying our English is bad. I’m saying that the English skills of many Pinoys HERE are terrible!!!)

My advice for you is try to find a company/school that recruits applicants from overseas. Get your visa sponsored, teach English for the time being, and then maybe ask your company for a lateral move.

On the other hand, because the Olympics will be held in Japan, some people predict that construction workers will soon be in demand. Other industries may follow, and that is something to look forward to.

      February 9, 2014

I’ve just read your reply, yes i’d like to email you privately too, but then I don’t know how(dunno your private email?), somehow my replies are always visible in the comments page. Anyway, I’ve just read all links you’ve posted to me, and it was very insightful, although some ways brutally honest?, but then I loved your post when you’re talking about being an ALT, it was so interesting, you described the job so thoroughly, I think it had the actual opposite effect in me though, I ended up wanting to experience that job, I know I’m weird.

I did read some of your other posts too, and I love your writing, it’s kinda mean sometimes, but then, it’s fun to read, it’s really straight to the point…I kinda got a bit discouraged by how hard it’d be for a filipino to get a decent job there(hard being an understatement too), but knowing me, I still want to find some ways around those things, I probably would never give up anyway(although it does seem too impossible :(…but then I dunno if I ever find the time to actually gather up my determination…

…and I totally agree at what you said(on one of your posts), I mean how could they even judge our english speaking ability, when they can’t even speak it themselves? I love japan, but I do know reality can be harsh, and that was just plain unfair. Lastly, is there a way to really contact you privately though? just because I don’t really want some of my replies to be to be posted publicly in the comments…because I do ask a lot don’t I? thanks again anyway 🙂

What you say about that certain David may be true. he may not be able to keep a job and ends up writing bad stuff on Craigslist. But then, with the exception of #3, these ads (or variations of these ads) regular appear on Craigslist. Why then are they forever looking for new employees?

i think simply craigslist is cheaper than paying an agency and companies like that are always looking for new staff high rotation like exchange students

cleaning waitress guesthouse = also cleaning , so no surpirse

i think just people who cant find a job try craigslist and fail again then instead of complaining to an introduction agency , they just write bad stuff. it are not the companies, they just try to avoid dealing with agencies and have to deal with this kind of anger instead.

so if I were you i would not contribute spreading bad rumour unless you really tried working at one of these companies , I think it is just not fair to do .

Hello, your post is really helpful. I’ve been using Craiglist and searching for a job ever since I came to Japan 6 months ago and would never expected it to be this difficult. I’ve encountered so many employers on Cragilist that would not reply my emails after asking me for a interview time or a résumé. I’ve been to several interviews (restaurants) but were rejected as I didn’t have enough Japanese abilities. Neither was it easy for me to get a English teaching job because I wasn’t from a Native speaking country… So may I have your opinions on what jobs should be looking for and what suits me the most for someone like me who could only speak very basic Japanese and not from an English speaking native country?

Hi. What are you expertise ? Computer skills? How about learning basic Japanese?
Or.. what about working on the US bases – you know, Yokosuka, Okinawa etc ? I know a half-Japanese lady who moved to Okinawa. She seems to be enjoying her life there.
Good luck Alyvia. Let me know how it turns out.

Hi, I am not expertised at anything as I am just a high school graduate and I am currently studying the Japanese language at a language institute here in Tokyo but it seems like it’s a little hard for me to cope up with the language… As for moving, I can’t really do so until my course ends a year later…

I recently got an interview for a job on Craiglist. It just said male floor stuff Ginza for English and Japanese speaking person. Should I be worried?

I wonder if anyone knows what’s up with Global Tool 英会話スクール。 They’ve been posting ads for a teacher for almost three months, and I’m guessing they either have some requirement that’s not stated on their ad or something shady is going on and people keep quitting or aren’t accepting any offer. I was contemplating applying but after seeing it posted with the same shitty photo over and over and over again (and lack of proper punctuation and capitalization), I decided to pass. :p
